NOTES

SKILL LEVEL: Experienced

Work the bag from bottom to top, beginning from rectangular base. Work 4 panels (front, back and sides) in herringbone stitch around 4 sides of the base separately. At last, join the side edges of each panel with invisible chain stitch seam.

MEASURES

Width of base: 35 cm in width
Width of top piece (bag opening): 33 cm in width
Height: 32 cm
Depth (sides): 10 cm

POINTS USED

Chain, chain stitch (crochet-hook seam), slip stitch, single crochet.

Crab stitch: single crochet, from left to right.

Herringbone stitch in back-and-forth rows: work as many stitches as necessary, repeating the module (1st and 2nd row) until you have reached your desired length.

Cast on as many ch as you need 1 ch.

1st row (RS): insert the hook into 2nd ch from hook and work 1 sc, insert the hook into 2nd loop placed on front part of sc you have just made (2 loops on the hook), insert the hook into next base ch, yarn over, pull 1 loop and extend it slightly

(3 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull it through 3 loops on crochet-hook closing the 1st stitch, * insert the hook into 3rd of 3 loops that shape the front part of previous stitch (2 loops on crochet-hook), insert the hook into next base ch, yarn over, pull 1 loop and extend it slightly (3 loops on crochet-hook), yarn over and pull it through 3 loops on crochet-hook closing the stitch *, rep from * to * in each next st. running out all base ch, 1 turning ch (never consider it like st.).

2nd row (WS): on top part of the sts. there are 3 threads. Insert the hook under 3 top threads of 1st st. and work 1 sc, insert the hook into 2nd loop of sc, but with yarn in front, and insert the hook on back of 2nd loop (2 loops on crochet-hook), continue with yarn in front and insert the hook under 3 top threads of next base st. (from back to front), yarn over, pull 1 loop and extend it slightly (3 loops on crochet-hook), yarn over and pull it through 3 loops on crochet-hook, closing the stitch * with yarn in front of work, insert the hook on back of 3rd loop of previous stitch (2 loops on crochet-hook), always with yarn in front of work insert the hook under 3 top threads of next base st. (from back to front), yarn over, pull 1 loop and extend it slightly (3 loops on crochet-hook), yarn over and pull it through 3 loops on crochet-hook closing the stitch *, rep. from * to * in each st. until the end, 1 turning ch.

The number of sts. must always be the same.

Always rep. 1st and 2nd row, considering that across 1st row you must insert the hook under 3 top threads of each base st. instead of into base ch.

Seam by invisible chain stitch technique: work it passing the hook through line of sl st of 2 panels, joining the corresponding edges by strong and perfect seam.

Put one panel on the other one (WS against WS), check that you must have same number of stitches on each part (to avoid making crocked seam). Always keep the working yarn inside 2 pieces you are sewing.

* 1st step: using the hook enter through 1st st. of back panel (from RS to WS), yarn over and pull 1 loop.

2nd step: insert the hook through 1st st. of front panel (from RS to WS), yarn over and pull 1 loop (2 loops on crochet-hook), yarn over and pull it through 2 loops on crochet-hook closing the stitch *, rep from * to * until you have sewn all sts.

INSTRUCTIONS

RETTANGULAR BASE

Start from one short side and work in back-and-forth rows.

Using size 4 mm crochet-hook, cast-on 18 ch 1 turning ch. Work 18 sts. in herringbone stitch, rep. 1st and 2nd row (repetition module) until you have worked 56 rows; work last row on WS.

1st finishing round (RS): do not cut the yarn and work 1 ch (do not consider it like one st..) and 1 round in sc around the perimeter as foll.: 18 sc along each short side, 56 sc along each long side and 3 sc in every corner, inserting 1 SM into 2nd sc of every 3-sc-group (corner); close with 1 sl st into 1st sc of the round.

2nd finishing round (RS): using size 4.5 mm crochet-hook, work 1 sl st in every sc (do not overtighten); end with 1 sl st into 1st sl st of the round, cut and tie off the yarn, then hide the ends on WS.

The base measures 10 x 35 cm.

SIDE PANELS (x 2)

Using size 4 mm hook, work in herringbone st. on 20 sc of 1st finishing round along short side of the base, working 1st and 20th st. into second corner-sc marked with 1 SM and inserting hook through 2 top threads of every base sc. Cont. on these 20 sts. working 2nd row of herringbone st., then rep. 1st and 2nd row of the stitch until 52nd row included, then work the 53rd row (RS) rep. the 1st row. Now the panel measures 32 cm in height. Cut and tie off the yarn.

Work 2nd side panel as given for first one.

FRONT PANEL

Using size 4 mm crochet-hook, work in herringbone st. on 58 sc of 1st finishing round along one long side of the base, working 1st and 58th st. on second corner-sc marked with 1 SM and inserting the hook through 2 top threads of every base sc.

Cont. on these 58 sts. working the 2nd row of herringbone st., then rep. 1st and 2nd row of the module until you have worked the 40th row then, for central opening shaping, continue working 2 pieces separately as foll.: 13 rows in herringbone st. on first 19 sts., leaving the rem. sts; cut and tie off the thread. Skip 20 central sts. of 40th row and, on last 19 sts. of the same row, work 13 rows in herringbone st.; cut and tie off the thread. Check that rows of the panel must be the same of rows of side panels; it’s necessary to make a regular joining seam.

BACK PANEL

Work as given for front panel.

FINISHING

Panels finishing: using size 4.5 mm crochet-hook, work in sl st around 3 sides of every panel. Check that number of stitches must be the same of number of rows along every side edge of each panel; it’s necessary to make a regular joining seam.

Give the finishing touch to the opening of the bag: before sewing the sides, work 1 round in crab st. around the circumference of the bag (opening), working 1 crab st. in every available st. of top edge of each panel, joining the 4 parts in correspondence of 4 top corners of the bag. This step prepares the bag for the next step, i.e. the sewing of the sides.

Sides sewing: using size 3.5 mm hook and the invisible chain st. technique, join the side edges of 4 panels. Start from the right of the panels from top to down and on the left of panels from down to top.

Handles: using size 4.5 mm crochet-hook and double yarn, work a romanian point lace cord, 38 cm in length; cut and tie off the yarn. Work the second handle like the first one, then, using darning needle and Eco crochet yarn, sew the ends of each handle at the sides of bag opening (like shown by the picture).

Hide the ends.
