SKILL LEVEL: Easy

Work the cap in spiral with top-down technique, that is from top to bottom.

Change color and tie off the yarn: change the color at last st. of the round. For example, if you are working last hdc of the round with orange col., make last yarn over using mustard yellow col.; in this way you have closed the hdc and, at the same time, you have the loop in new color, ready to start new round. At the end of spiral working, there is a little gap between 2 colors; it's totally normal.

Make 2 knots to tie off the cast-on end of new color with previous color yarn, do not pull to hard, cut yarn of previous color leaving 5 cm tail and continue working new round, hiding 2 tails as you work. Remember that the tails must be enough long to hide them on WS, at the end of pattern (using darning needle).

Chain stitch, slip stitch, half double crochet.
Increase: 2 hdc into the same base st.
Spiral working: work the sts. continuously, i.e. do not close every round with 1 sl st and do not begin every round with 2 ch.

WS = wrong side of work
SM = stitch marker
st. / sts. = stitch / es
incr. = increase
ch = chain stitch
col. = color
tog. = together
sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
rep. = repeat
foll. = follow / ing

SIZE: Single

Height: 19 cm
Circumference of the crown: 60 cm

Procedure

Crown

Using orange yarn, cast-on 4 ch and close in ring shape with 1 sl st in beg. ch.

1st round: 2 ch (= 1st hdc), 4 hdc into the ring, place 1 SM in last st. you have worked. From this round, place 1 SM at last st. of every round; it shows the beg. of every next round and any color change. Do not close the round and cont. in spiral.

2nd round: 2 hdc in each st. of the round. [5 incr. = 10 hdc]

3rd round: 2 hdc in each st. of the round. [10 incr. = 20 hdc]

4th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in next st.) 10 times; at last yarn over of last hdc use yellow yarn [30 sts.]

Tie off the threads like above.

5th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts.) 10 times. [40 sts.]

6th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in each of next 3 sts.) 10 times. [50 sts.]

7th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in each of next 4 sts.) 10 times. [60 sts.]

8th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in each of next 5 sts.) 10 times; at last yarn over of last hdc use the white yarn. [70 sts.]

Tie off the threads.

9th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in each of next 6 sts.) 10 times. [80 sts.]

10th round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in each of next 7 sts.) 10 times. [90 sts.]

11th round: 1 hdc in each st., at last yarn over of last hdc use orange yarn.

Cont. working 1 hdc in each st. of every next round, reaching 17 cm in height, alternating the colors in same sequence (4 rounds with orange, 4 rounds with yellow, 3 rounds with white).

For brim shaping, cont. working one round with the increases.

Brim

1st round: (1 incr. in next st., 1 hdc in next st.) 45 times. [134 sts.]

From 3rd to 5th round: 1 hdc in every st. At the end of last round work 1 sl st in 1st sc of the same round to align the work. Cut and tie off the yarn, then, using the darning needle, hide the ends on WS.
