It is very important to check your gauge and measure the tension correctly to achieve the same results and measurements as the pattern. If the gauge is different, try adjusting the needle size up or down by half a size until you get the correct measurement.

M1L: 1 increase to the left (insert the left needle from front to back under the strand between 2 stitches you have worked and knit 1 through the back loop)
sl1 p-wise = slip 1 stitch purl-wise, with yarn in back of work.
sl2 p-wise = slip 2 stitches purl-wise, with yarn in back of work.
k2tog = knit 2 stitches together (insert right needle through the next 2 sts on the left needle and knit them together = 1 st).

Procedure

SECTION 1

Cast-on 3 sts.

Row 1 (WS): purl.

Row 2 (RS): k1, M1R, SM, sl1 p-wise, SM, M1L, k1.

Row 3: p2, M-SM, p1, M-SM, p2.

From the next row and across all even rows, at the beginning and end of the

row, slip 2 sts purl-wise with yarn in back, shaping the I-cord bands.

Row 4: sl2 p-wise, knit to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, knit to 2 sts from the end, sl2 p-wise.

Row 5: purl to SM, M-SM, p1, M-SM, purl to end of row.

Row 6: sl2 p-wise, knit to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, knit to last 2 sts, sl2 p-wise.

Row 7: as Row 5.

Repeat from Row 4 to Row 7, 20 times. Work Row 6 as follows: sl2 p-wise, k2tog,

knit to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, knit to last 4 sts, skp, sl2 p-wise.

Row 8: sl2 p-wise, (k3, yo, k3tog tbl, yo) rep to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, work all stitches in a specular way to the previous side up to 2 sts from the end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 9: as Row 5.

Row 10: sl2 p-wise, (yo, k3tog tbl, yo, k3) rep to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, work all stitches in a specular way to the previous side up to 2 sts from the end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 11: as Row 5.

Rep from Row 8 to Row 11, once.

Rep from Row 4 to Row 7, 4 times. Work Row 6 as follows: sl2 p-wise, k2tog, knit to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, knit to last 4 sts, skp, sl2 p-wise.

SECTION 2

Row 1: sl2 p-wise, (k3, yo, k3tog tbl, yo) rep to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, work all stitches in a specular way to the previous side up to 2 sts from the end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 2: purl to SM, M-SM, p1, M-SM, purl to end of row.

Row 3: sl2 p-wise (yo, k3tog tbl, yo, k3) rep to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, work all stitches in a specular way to the previous side up to 2 sts from the end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 4: as Row 2.

Row 5: sl2 p-wise, knit to marker, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, knit to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 6: as Row 2.

Row 7: sl2 p-wise, k2tog, knit to SM, M1R, M-SM, sl1 p-wise, M-SM, M1L, knit to 4 sts from end of row, skp, sl2 p-wise.

Row 8: as Row 2.

Rep from Row 5 to Row 8, 7 times.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 4, 3 times.

Rep from Row 5 to Row 8, 10 times.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 4, twice.

Rep from Row 5 to Row 8, 11 times.

On WS, bind off stitches until the center: There is 1 st on the right needle, bind off 1 st and remove the second SM.

Slip the stitches from the right needle to the left needle, k2tog, then purl to end of row.

SECTION 3

Row 1: sl2 p-wise, knit to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 2: purl to end of row.

Row 3: sl2 p-wise, k2tog, knit to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 4: as Row 2.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 4, 6 times.

SECTION 4

Row 1: sl2 p-wise, k5, (yo, k3tog tbl, yo, k3) rep to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 2: purl to end of row.

Row 3: sl2 p-wise, k2tog, (yo, k3tog tbl, yo, k3) rep to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 4: rep Row 2.

Row 5: sl2 p-wise, knit to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 6: rep Row 2.

Row 7: sl2 p-wise, k2tog, knit to 2 sts from end of row, sl2 p-wise.

Row 8: rep Row 2.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 8, 3 times.

Rep from Row 5 to Row 8, 11 times.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 8, twice.

Rep from Row 5 to Row 8, 3 times.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 8, twice.

Rep from Row 5 to Row 8, 9 times.

Rep from Row 1 to Row 8, once.

SECTION 5

Repeat from Row 5 to Row 8 as Section 4, until there are 4 sts on the needle, knit all sts, then slip the stitches from the right needle to the left needle with yarn in back, using the tip of the needle pick up 1 st on the right needle and pass the previous stitch over the latter, move to the left needle. Repeat until you have finished the shawl.

Weave in all ends.

KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS

The garment is worked in one single piece seamless. The pattern is created by the yarn tones. Odd rows on WS, even rows on RS.
