Back post half double crochet (BPhdc): insert the hook into the back loop only of the base stitch and work 1 hdc as usual.

Using size 5.5 mm crochet-hook, cast-on 44 ch.

Work in back-and-forth rows.

Row 1: 43 BPhdc, 1 turning ch. [43 hdc]

Row 2: 20 BPhdc, 3 increases, 20 BPhdc, 1 turning ch. [46 hdc]

Row 3: 46 BPhdc, 1 turning ch.

Row 4: 22 BPhdc, 3 increases, 21 BPhdc, 1 turning ch. [49 hdc]

From row 5 to row 15: 49 BPhdc, 1 turning ch.

Row 16: 22 BPhdc, 3 decreases, 21 BPhdc, 1 turning ch. [46 hdc]

Row 17: 46 BPhdc, 1 turning ch.

Row 18: 20 BPhdc, 3 decreases, 20 BPhdc. [43 hdc]

Row 19: 43 BPhdc.











RIGHT SIDE

Row 20: 16 BPhdc, 3 hdc tog, 5 BPhdc, 3 hdc tog, 16 BPhdc, 1 turning ch. [39 hdc]

Row 21: 15 BPhdc, 3 hdc tog, 3 BPhdc, 3 hdc tog, 15 BPhdc, 1 turning ch. [35 hdc]

Fold the side and join the edges with sl st, picking up the outer loop only.

Cut the yarn and close.











LEFT SIDE

On the opposite side, repeat from row 20 to row 22, as given for the right side.

Fold the side and join the edges with sl st, picking up the outer loop only.











Cut the yarn and close.











TOP BAND

Work around the top opening perimeter as follows.

Round 1: 1 sl st in each edge hdc; close the round.

Round 2: 1 sl st in each stitch of the round below.

Cut the yarn and close.











HANDLE

Using size 5.5 mm crochet-hook, chain 35.

Row 1: 15 hdc, 4 sc, 15 hdc, 1 turning ch. [34 sts]

From row 2 to row 4: 34 BPhdc, 1 turning ch.

Row 5: 15 BPhdc, 4 sc, 15 BPhdc.

Cut the yarn leaving a long sewing tail.

Fold the handle in half lengthwise and join the long edges with sl st. This will shape a lightly padded strap











FINISHING

Using the darning needle, sew the ends of the handle on the sides, like shown by the picture.

Using small sewing stitches, further secure the upper edges of the bag body at the handle attachment to stabilize the shape.

Weave in all ends on the WS.

If desired, make a lining to fit the inside of the bag and secure it with small, invisible stitches along the top edge

Your bag is ready to use!

KNITTING INSTRUCTIONS

Work the bag in a single panel in back-and-forth rows. Finally, close the two sides with slip stitch. Work the handle separately and then join it on the bag.
